Un, part of the code (emkdu.dll) was closed source, and even the code that was available didn't match the version number of the pre-compiled binaries and sometimes didn't even compile. And no one but the developers had access to the server the source code was hosted on, so people couldn't check what was being updated as it was updated (searching through all the code after it's been released is a lot harder than checking each small update as it's added).

I really don't get how an open source project isn't already transparent, all anyone had to do to find the tricks was to look at the bloody code.

what pisses me off is that there are so many people blaming LL for this. last time i checked, LL didn't insert an iframe into the login screen to use everyone as a botnet to DDOS someone's website.

i loved that viewer but the shady dealings of its devs pushed me away and i will never allow it to be installed on my hard drive ever again, even under some other name. i won't even install emergence.

reading though things, arabella seems to be just as shady as the rest, and possibly jessica was the only one there that was actually wanting to work on a viewer. but all of this could just be drama and they could all be full of it.

i cannot trust any of these people.

I haven't been on SL more than 2 years but I have already found it a nice escape from reality. There are people on the adult grid that mentally belong on the teen grid for their lack in maturity yes, but all in all I think most adults on SL come to get away from real life, and for some that means getting away from their own teenagers for a little while. While there are PG sims on the adult grid, anyone who knows 16 year olds knows that they aren't easily stopped by things called rules (To those who have posted thus far, you have to know that though you might onsider yourself mature, you are a minority among your peers). Parents do not watch their children online as well as they should and the older the child the less the parent watches them. Mature or not, they are still children and in this world there are people that target children because of their age.
There are too many risks involved in merging these worlds, as I for one have always been disturbed by the idea of ADULTS with child avatars, now the idea that there will be actual children behind them is a whole nother scary issue. There are rules to keep child avatars from ADULT marked sims and yet I have seen it happen and it has angered me, and 16 year olds will be able to break these rules just as easily as adults.
On another note, has anyone considered the legal ramifications in putting teenagers in such a finacally driven envionrment with adults. I don't think there are many adults out there that will like the idea of compeating in a market next to 16 year olds when they have spent years compeating with their peers already. Bad things will happen when you take a few already childish adults and take away their income and give it to a 16 year old.
I for one am scared to see what the future of SecondLife holds.
