Your analogy to StarOffice is interesting. To take it further, it seems increasingly likely that the spin-off from Star Office (OpenOffice) will indeed take a large chunk of the market from Microsoft Office. Indeed, it has already made big dents in Microsoft Office's share. And OpenOffice isn't going to go away.

Similarly, OpenSim is unlikely to go away any time soon, even if LCO eventually does.

There will be many grids out there in the future based on OpenSim. One grid´s website and grid better as maybe another one, one grid longer around as maybe another one. All depends on you: The User!

SL has seen the hype. They p...ed so many users with dictatorship, not listening to users, and charging you through the nose for their service. I just recall the whole Openspace Sim´s raising the price by 60% on their owners. What would you do with another company doing this to you? I would call this fraud!

What did you get for your money at SL? Traffic?
Why do you pay $1000 USD for a full prim sim, 285 something for tier and you have even to invest more to get traffic (if any)?

What do I have to read about "Service in SL"? Did you ever open a support ticket or an abuse report? Did you get any response and if, WHEN? Was you avatar ever banned for any reason (or none) and Linden did listen to your concerns? And if... WHEN? After 2 days or 2 weeks? Or never?

Makes me giggle!

So, why not go for another grid? You pay maybe $80-$120 for a whole region, with even more prims. Looking at this amount of money I have all time on earth to get traffic in!

I can not speak for LCO. I have no avatar there and will never have one. Why? I do not trust grid owners who do not reveal abit about themselves or about their company to the public. This applies for all grids coming up, but someday there will be one to compare.

And why not be a member of some grids? Hypergrid is coming... just teleport from one grid to another!

Yes, I too would advise people to steer clear of Legend City.
I was lured away from SL for the paper thin population and decided to prepare a business should it ever grow to a "real" sim.

I purchased two open sims and one private region. Every single day at least one of my regions required restart as the space it occupied just turned to ocean (Dissappeared).

Some days all of these regions would "Dissappear", requiring restart several times a day.

They still haven't figured out how to keep deleted prims deleted- there is a pair of prims which I followed their complicated directions how to properly delete them, and deleted them at least 50 times since November.

Legend City set up my first open space as a private region which I promptly notified them the very day it was created.
They insisted the mistake "isn't possible" and after repeated enquiries just gave up bugging them about it.

Note that the sim never exceeded the 3750 prim limit afforded for open space sims. Also note that Open space sims are limited to 20x20mprim size, and Private region allows mega prims up to 256x256.
I had less than a dozen prims over 20x20m.

This is a copy of an email I sent to one of their staff after practically being called a thief by another staff member:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>-----<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<I>About Land>>>>>>>>>>>-----<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

It is my guess they will probably not even consider this.

I have to nearly agree - this analysis applies to all alterante grids: why should people who do not intend to become land owners switch over from SL? There is nothing really better for people who do not intend to become sellers and there are a couple of things that are worse. Most importantly a lack of other people. Who wants to stay in a virtual world that is only inhabitated by shops and land sellers and nothing more?

On the other hand not becoming a success does not necessarily mean "failure". The Microsoft metaphor applies: OSX or Linux do not share the same success as Windows but they are not failures either. Alternate grids can become niche-solutions for certain groups of people. But even for that they need to communicate better their respective advantages for exactly those groups.

Unless alternate grids do more to motivate a switchover than just provide less for less money I agree that they will fail.

Well if you check the first SL Website in the wayback machine.....

http://web.archive.org/web/20030203084809/secondlife.com/login/splash.php

You would never think: "Hey this is great! This is going to succeed". Then they got some people to work on the graphics and the website then got a lot better.

Also in 2003/2004 SL was really buggy more buggy than the actual open simulators.

The open simulator project is evolving and I noticed very good changes. I hope that at least only one of all these open grids succeed.

And just as I was pointing out you will can run your own metaverse this showed up "Linden Lab: standalone servers soon": http://www.metaversejournal.com/2008/11/29/standalone-servers-soo/

<i>"The 2009 beta of a standalone Second Life grid - this, like the OpenSim platform, will allow users to run their own grid. Expect to hear more on the beta program in the very near future."</I>

<i>"The standalone servers will provide a great opportunity for Australians in addition to current offerings like Openlife. Once further work is done on <b>being able to move between grids</b>, Australia may actually have a higher performance option than currently exists.</I>

While I endorse competition I can't see how using Opensim (which is in Alpha stage right now), throw a web page together, will have any impact on the virtual worlds market.
I can run Opensim on my own PC, with more control over the virtual world myself. And when Opensim has matured I suspect it will be easier to install, and get running for Joe six pack too.
I'm rather sure you will be able to teleport to/from Second Life to Opensim worlds, so personally I won't bother signing up for LOC. Seems I can visit them through my Second Life account anyway in the future (but LOC probably will blok that?) ;-)
